But not only that I really appreciated hearing about the war stories of WW II. My father also served in the Philippines during the second world war. He also landed in Leyte. I think he probably arrived sometime in January 1945, just after Cal had arrived. I know my father got to have a few days leave over Christmas of 1944. He had boot camp in Texas and was being shipped out of California. On the way to California he was allowed a 2 week leave at his home in southern Utah. He likes to tell a story about riding the bus home for Christmas and when they got to Flagstaff on Christmas eve there was a major snow storm and the bus he was to transfer to take him home had to cancel the trip due to the snow. The sheriff in Flagstaff found a home for he and another soldier from his home town to spend the night Christmas eve. The sheriff then found then a ride to finish their trip home on Christmas day. My father tells of going with his father while on leave to work with their cows, my grandfather and father were both castle ranchers. Anyway, my dad's leave was shortened by about 6-7 days and he had to leave to go to California to ship out about a week earlier than he was supposed to. My father always told us that that time my dad spent working the ranch with his father was the last time my dad would see his father alive. My grandfather died 6-7 months later while my father was in a foxhole in the Philippines. My father didn't even get word of his death until about 2 weeks after his funeral. My father never did speak much about the fighting in the war. I really appreciated hearing the details of what the battles were like over there. It makes me truly appreciate my father much more along with all the other selfless people that served our country at that great time of need. I'm just thankful that my father was one of those that got to return home.Tags : Amazon.com: By the Stars (9781462118151): Lindsay B. Ferguson: Books,Lindsay B. Lindsey takes you back in time to a simpler place where hard work and family life are the focus of Cal until he meets a beautiful girl It is so fun to watch this relationship develop. Then there is the war and the complications that come between them because of his involvement there. Lindsey does a great job of mixing the two events and when it is over you have made some wonderful new friends. don't miss this wonderful read.
I loved this story! I visited my grandparents' farm every summer as a child. Like Cal, my grandpa was a WW2 vet and had some pretty crazy and terrifying stories of the war. It seems like the war defined that generation in a lot of ways, and reading this book reminded me of so many stories. Of course I enjoyed the romance as well, and I wished I knew Kate- I think we would have been great friends!
Amazing story, made even more amazing by the fact that it's largely a true story. I couldn't wait to see how Cal and Kate's story ended. Perfect clean read for those who are enthralled with life during WWII, like me.
I love LDS Historical Fiction and being a retired Army Officer, I very much enjoy reading about the challenges faced by combat soldiers during war. However, I'm not really keen on sappy love stories. When I first read the introduction for this novel, I wasn't sure that it would be right for me. Despite the love story, I thought that I would give it a try. I'm glad I did. As I started reading and stuck with it, I began to be mesmerized and found that I couldn't put it down. This story reminded me very much of my personal experiences. I highly recommend this book. You'll be glad you read it.
this was such a good book. I loved these two people and their love story. I thought Kate was very much ahead of the times with her way of thinking. Like how she wasn't married when he returned from a mission and she was more direct in how she said things than women of that time. I love that she snuck on the base and pretended to be his wife. I loved the type of man Cal was. Very honorable and full of integrity. I really love WWII so what I liked about this book and WWII was the way it told just the everyday life for soldiers. And everyday life was still terrible. I was amazed at some of the conditions and I will never forget those yucky pigs!! I loved reading about the dance halls of the time. I also loved how he knew that was going to be his wife but didn't know how that was going to actually happen. I loved this generation of men and women and thats what I loved most about this book is that it is based on real people and their real story. I loved the authors way of writing she was really good at giving you enough detail that you didn't feel lost and not to much detail to that you get bored. A fabulous book !!
I loved the story of Cal and Kate. This is a story of learning to love and living through the pains of war and separation. War is hard and evil. It reminded me of the pain of modern war and how it affects people and families. I think this is a sweet love story where Couples learn how to learn to love so deeply that their views of what they thought they wanted changes to fit what God intended for them all along
I bought the book on my the day it was released, and I wasn't just pleasantly surprised, I LOVED IT. I love that it is based on a true story, and I can't wait to talk to Lindsay about what exactly is history and what she created. I love the characters. I love the romance. I love it all. And you know what it really made me want to do? Like big time? Go dancing! Can we resurrect dance halls, please?
I know that among my friends, Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson, was extremely well-liked. Edenbrooke was the first in a collection of "Proper Romances". For friends who love Edenbrooke and other clean romance novels, By the Stars should be your next read!
