Ivey had a terrible childhood. If it wasn't for her big brother Casey taking her away, it would have been a whole lot worse and the unforgivable would have happened. Now Ivey and Casey travel from place to place. They never grow attached to anyone and are always looking for the next score. When they end up in the small town of Mustang, Ivey can feel that it's different. From the moment she sets eyes on Grayson Cody, Ivey wants to stay in Mustang and finally make a home. As it turns out, Grayson feels the same way and after a little push, Ivey agrees to go out with him. Soon, they fall in love and everyone in town can see how happy they are. But the past isn't always in the past and grudges don't always disappear.I absolutely adored Grayson Cody! The man was hot, honest, sweet, kind, sexy and he took care of his grandmother! Swoon! When he stepped in to save Ivey before he really ever met her, you just knew he was a one of a kind kind of perfect. Ivey is also a great character. Her life consisted of what she could carry in a bag, yet she never gave up and took a chance with Grayson. She's the type of strong leading lady that you actually like. Not one of those bratty annoying bitches that some books try to make us like, when in reality we just want to slap em'. I understood her loyalty to Casey. I didn't necessary like it, but I understood it. But seven years ... Wow! Lash and Brutus added to the story and even Hoot made me smile. Sonny was also another great character and his introduction in the story cracked me up. I would love more from this series and hope we end up getting Whit's story so we can check in with everyone in Mustang.
Play it Safe was another great story by Kristen Ashley. It made me smile, laugh, swoon and even cry. Can't wait to see what's up next.

This will be the first Kristen Ashley book I will read with lovers in their twenties. It did not mean it was less passionate because it was. As a matter of fact the passion was more fiery and emotions run very high. We also don't have a less sinister antagonist but a very devilish one/ones.
Ivey and Gray thought they have a chance at happiness. They thought wrong. Evil people are relentless. They took seven years out of the lives of these two. In that seven years Ivey has stopped running, had parted ways with Casey, her misguided brother. He got her back before, but now he is careless.
I am elated to see this slip of a girl get rich, and get a family like Lash and Brutus.
Series of events, coincidences and misfortunes connected the ex lovers together. I love the way the truth came out quickly without any procrastination on the part of the author. I also love how the story wraps and the pleasant surprises we got. Of course this is Kristen Ashley. She is a Master at what she does. The narrator of the audio book was very talented. I enjoyed reading and listening to the story since this give me no break in my enjoyment of this book. Awesome.
SPOILERS POSSIBLE
If the H had remained celibate like the h did, this would have been nearly perfect. At least he didn't marry someone else, thankfully!
The bad guy is suitably bad, and for a dumb reason. But it does get explained so we do finally understand why the H and the h were lied to and forced apart. There is a jealous ex girlfriend who ends up married to the bad guy, which she deserved. He was mean to her and cheated apparently. She was a horrible person so she got what she deserved too.
The love story was actually very nice and I really loved the main characters, especially the h, Ivey.
I liked this one although the separation was a tad too long for my taste.
I have a complicated relationship with the books of KA. Some I have outright despised, some I like during one read and dislike in the next, some I love parts of and hate parts of. This is one of the very few that I loved completely without reservation.
All the hallmarks of the KA novel are there gorgeous heroine (with a great head of hair) who doesn't know how gorgeous she is, an alpha male hero, detailed descriptions of clothes, decor, and how people lay next to each other in bed (no, that's not a joke). But why it works for me this time is because everything has been dialed back. Yes, the heroine calls the hero "honey," but not ad nauseam. Yes, there's talk about "giving beauty," but only a few times near the beginning of the book. Yes, the hero has that specific KA way she has her males speak, but there are fewer run on sentences that I have to repeatedly read in order to decipher. Yes, the epilogue spans years (six I think?), but that's one thing I've never really minded about her novels. Oh, and there is not one parenthetical in the entire thing. I don't know if she had an editor for this one (other than to proof read), but if so, I think this person did an excellent job of dialing back the KA-ness of the novel while still making it very much a KA novel.
I really liked both Ivey and Gray. Yes, they are both very much in the mold of a typical KA heroine and hero but again it's dialed back and some of things that make really grit my teeth aren't there. Ivey is 22 and 29 in the novel and she acts appropriately for her age. No constant refrains of
Oh. My. God. like she's 15 and not an adult. No throwing fits or being "sassy."
And Gray must be one of the two, maybe three, KA heroes that I have not wanted to punch in the face at least once. This guy is an alpha, but he's not pushy or aggressive. He doesn't have the "it's my way or the highway" attitude most KA heroes have. When he and Ivey fight he doesn't infantalize her or make it seem like her opinions aren't valid.
I have just a couple of quibbles about the plot. Ivey has been a pool hustler since she picked up a cue stick at the age of 15. She had no lessons, no training, she was just immediately good which is a little eye-rolling. I also wish that when knew more about her feeling on playing pool outside of the hustling aspect. I don't think she played once during the seven years she was away. Does she enjoy it? Does she just not really care?
The other quibble has to do with Ivey's job when she leaves Mustang. This girl, with zero dance training, becomes the biggest and most popular burlesque queen in Vegas and in the span of a couple of years. Really? Not that you have to be a professional dancer, but it seemed a bit far fetched.
But over all, I really did enjoy this one. This is my 31st KA novel and I honestly thought I was done with her books, but this one has pulled me right back in.
